Does your accountant know trucks?

Many trucking and transport operators leave money on the table not knowing, or not claiming, all of the tax deductions available to them.

As accountants who specialise in trucking and transport, we know what truck drivers and operators can claim, what you need in order to make the claim and how to calculate your deductions.

Frequently asked questions

My accountant hasn’t claimed my fuel tax credits, can you apply for retrospective fuel tax credit refunds?

Yes you can apply for retrospective fuel tax credit refunds.

Any business that uses fuel off-road in their heavy or light commercial vehicles, equipment or machinery can claim. This includes businesses who have either under-claimed in previous periods at the standard on-road rate, or not at all.

As long as you can claim a consistent pattern of use for a period of six months, you will be entitled to claim retrospective FTC rebates. You will need to know how much fuel you have used, what type of fuel you’ve purchased for each business activity and how much of that was used in off-road activity.

How much can we expect to get back in Fuel Tax Credit rebates?

It depends entirely on your business and the nature and amount of off-road fuel usage. However, in our experience, some customer rebates have ranged from hundreds of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on the size and nature of the business.

What can truck drivers claim on tax?

Truck drivers can claim things like vehicle expenses, clothing, sunglasses, travel and in some cases licence renewals. Get the full list in our tax deductions guide for truck drivers.

Can I claim my truck licence on tax?

You can’t claim the cost of getting or renewing your driver’s licence, even if it is a condition of your employment. This is a private expense.  You also can’t claim the initial cost of getting a special licence or condition on your licence to get a job as a truck driver. You can claim the additional costs to renew a special licence or condition on your licence in order to perform your employment duties. For example, a heavy vehicle permit.

Can truck drivers claim meals on taxes?

No, you can’t claim private expenses like meals, snacks and drinks that you consume during your normal working hours.
